What is TurnerShip?

It refers to the status of individuals who make up the legions of Turner admirers all over the world. The Turner Museum is cordially inviting all – that is YOU – to become patrons of J.M.W.Turner’s cause.

In the spirit of the Turner Museum we present our first Jubilee Patron Premiums!

Months were spent preparing these most beautiful and memorable ways to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the opening of The Turner Museum on April 23, 1977 and to thank you for your continued support at this time.

The Turner Museum is a cultural and educational non-profit organization and its sole support comes from patrons.

Jubilee Patron Premiums

Beauport - Full Copy
Turner made this picture for super-rich "Mad Jack" Fuller ... known for his eccentrities such as being locked up for two days in the House of Commons for outrageous behavior during a parliamentary debate in 1810.

Fond Fare Well - Cosmic Moment (Beauport)
Turner routinely includes in his pictures glimpses of 19th century every day life -The Turner calls them Cosmic Moments - many like this one survive into the 21st century. For more please visit our Cosmic Moments exhibition.

Lord Mildmay's "Sea Piece"
The history of this magnificent Turner is shrouded in mystery. Both the design Turner habitually creates for his original prints ... as well as his lordship's oil with a similar title ... vanish into thin air. For more about Turner's numerous mysteries please visit our TreasureHunt exhibition.

Read about the original Turner Print & Giclee Process
used for these exquisite premiums.

To promote optimum geographical distribution, only five premiums in each category are available per address - this number may be reduced at the discretion of the trustees of The Turner Museum in case of over-subscription.  25 of each of the premiums are reserved for Australian and New Zealand patrons. Additionally preference will be given to members in good standing of the Turner Society of London on a first come, first served basis. For subscription information please see form printed below. On April 23rd, 2003, Turner’s birthday, five per cent (5%) of the proceeds received will be donated to The Turner Society of London, where His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales is Patron – the founder of The Turner Museum has been the society’s vice-president (board member) since its start in 1975. The Turner Society has been promoting the cause of J.M.W.Turner ever since. (Please look up the society’s website: www.turnersociety.org.uk for more information.).

These are one-time Jubilee premiums and will not be repeated. The giclee versions of our aquatint are somewhat crisper than our original aquatint. The reason for that crispness and beauty of detail is quite simple: our aquatint is in excellent condition but its paper is some 200 years old – it is now off-white (very light beige), whereas the giclee is printed on archival white paper: as a result the colors are bright, the details more crisply delineated and the contrasts more visible, especially in the sky – here we have a prime example of a memorable “Turner sky”, with its beautiful coloring and superb cloud formations. Similar comments apply to the sepia- toned Lord Mildmay’s Sea Piece.

Thus in our opinion:

the giclee versions very closely approximates the appearance of the originals the way they looked 200 years ago.

Beauport will be sent to you in a package with the following:

1.   The giclee print with a

2.   Certificate of Authenticity including the numbering of your premium, and hand-signed by the director of The Turner Museum. You will receive an individual Certificate for every premium you earned.

3.   Additionally your premium will bear the blind-stamp of the museum in the bottom right corner of the image;

4.   A welcoming letter hand-signed by the founder of The Turner Museum, and

5.   A museum-quality brass name plate with a satin finish and baked epoxy coating with two lines:  Beauport on top and J.M.W.Turner underneath, ready to be affixed to your picture frame - no messing with tiny nails.

Much care has been given to foil counterfeiting (a) each and every certificate of authenticity is hand-signed and numbered, with a Register of Jubilee Patrons kept in the archives of the museum for permanent reference; (b) the museum’s blind-stamp is permanently and indelibly impressed upon the premium – the blind-stamp is a smaller version of The Turner Museum’s trade-mark logo which appears on every ‘page’ of this internet site, surrounded by a heart-shaped circle; (c) the certificate’s paper has the logo of the museum, similar to the blind-stamp, woven into it, (d) the certificate also bears the blind stamp of the museum and (f) the certificate is affixed so permanently to the back of the premium that any attempt of removal may severely damage it.

Note: The Turner Museum is a public trust as defined by section 501(c)(3) of the United States Internal Revenue Code. Donations are tax deductible to the extent permitted by law.
