Lord Mildmay's "Sea Piece" Jubilee Premium

Giclee version of Lord Mildmay’s Sea Piece.

seapiece.jpg (34400 bytes)

Lord Mildmay’s Sea Piece, also known as The Mildmay Sea Piece is based on a “Picture in possession of Sir John Mildmay Bart” (Bart.is the abbreviation of ‘Baronet’), according to the legend on the original print utilized to create our giclee version. Turner almost invariably used a design for all his original prints – in this instance no design has survived. The “picture”, that is the oil painting (if it ever existed) also seems to have disappeared. Thus the print we are using for the Jubilee Premium is the only surviving image of this Turner of surpassing beauty - it has all the “basic” Turner features: a magnificent sky, delicate gradations (in sepia tones), a peaceful sunset and people engaged in busy every-day activities. Turner himself published our Mildmay on February 12, 1812 as part of his famous Liber Studiorum series, perhaps his most ambitious venture in print-production.

Lord Mildmay’s Sea Piece  has each a limited edition of 999 plus 50 proofs reserved for the trustees of the museum. Both measure 48cm x  72cm (  12  x  18   inches).
